NOTICE Ensure that the cam lock is in the fully open position before seating the processor module Seating the processor module properly in the ZIF socket does not require force NOTICE A processor module that is not properly seated can result in an intermittent connection or permanent damage to the processor and ZIF socket 1 Align the pin 1 corner of the processor module so that it points to the triangle on the system board and insert the processor module into the ZIF socket When the processor module is correctly seated all four corners are aligned at the same height If one or more corners of the module are higher than the others the module is not seated correctly NOTICE Hold the processor down while turning the cam screw to prevent intermittent contact between the cam screw and processor 2 Tighten the ZIF socket by turning the cam screw clockwise to secure the processor module to the system board NOTE If a new microprocessor is installed you will receive one of the following a new thermal cooling assembly which will include an affixed thermal pad or you will receive a new thermal pad along with a tech sheet to illustrate proper installation 3 Replace the processor thermal cooling assembly see Processor Thermal Cooling Assembly 4 Update the BIOS using a flash BIOS update program CD see Flashing the BIOS From a CD Back to Contents Page Back to Contents Page Processor Thermal Cooling Assembly Dell Latitu

10. age Back to Contents Page Keyboard Dell Latitude D820 Service Manual A CAUTION Before working inside your Dell computer follow the safety instructions in your Product Information Guide A CAUTION To prevent static damage to components inside your computer discharge static electricity from your body before you touch any of your computer s electronic components You can do so by touching an unpainted metal surface 1 Follow the procedures in Before You Begin 2 Remove the hinge cover see Hinge Cover 3 Remove the three screws at the top of the keyboard NOTICE The keycaps on the keyboard are fragile easily dislodged and time consuming to replace Be careful when removing and handling the keyboard 4 Rotate the keyboard forward and lay it on the palm rest to allow access to the keyboard connector on the system board 5 Pull up on the pull tab to disconnect the keyboard cable connector from the keyboard connector on the system board keyboard 2 keyboard screws 3 keyboard cable connector a keyboard connector oP NOTICE To avoid scratching the palm rest when replacing the keyboard hook the tabs along the front edge of the keyboard into the palm rest and then secure the keyboard in place 6 To replace the keyboard connect the keyboard cable connector to the keyboard connector on the system board 7 Place the tabs along the front edge of the keyboard into the palm rest and lay the keyboard do
11. antenna cables to the WLAN card ensuring that you route the cables correctly Mobile Broadband Cards 1 Follow the procedures in Before You Begin 2 Remove the hinge cover see Hinge Cover 3 Remove the keyboard see Keyboard 4 Ground yourself by touching one of the metal connectors on the back of the computer K NOTE If you leave the area ground yourself again when you return to the computer 5 Ifa card is not already installed go to step 6 If you are replacing a card remove the existing card a Disconnect the antenna cable or cables from the card antenna cables b Release the card by spreading the metal securing tabs until the card pops up slightly Mobile Broadband card metal securing tabs 2 c Lift the card out of its connector NOTICE The connectors are keyed to ensure correct insertion If you feel resistance check the connectors and realign the card 6 Install the card NOTICE To avoid damaging the Mobile Broadband card never place cables on top of or under the card a Align the card with the connector at a 45 degree angle and press the card into the connector until it clicks NOTE Your Mobile Broadband card may have two or three connectors depending on your configuration Most connectors have color coded markings that correspond to the type of cable required For more specific information about which cable to connect to which connector see the documentation that came with you

15. efore removing the hard drive Do not remove the hard drive while the computer is turned on in standby mode or in hibernate mode NOTICE Hard drives are extremely fragile even a slight bump can damage the drive K NOTE Dell does not guarantee compatibility or provide support for hard drives from sources other than Dell K NOTE If you are installing a hard drive from a source other than Dell you need to install an operating system drivers and utilities on the new hard drive To replace the hard drive in the hard drive bay 1 Follow the procedures in Before You Begin 2 Turn the computer upside down and remove the two screws that secure the hard drive hard drive screws 2 NOTI CE When the hard drive is not in the computer store it in protective antistatic packaging See Protecting Against Electrostatic Discharge in the Product Information Guide screws 2 on sides of hard drive bezel hard drive bezel 3 Remove the two screws from the sides of the hard drive bezel and pull the bezel off the hard drive 4 Remove the new drive from its packaging Save the original packaging for storing or shipping the hard drive 5 Slide the hard drive bezel that you took off the old hard drive onto the new hard drive and fasten the two screws on the sides of the bezel NOTICE Use firm and even pressure to slide the drive into place If you use excessive force you may damage the connector 6 Slide the new ha

20. ots it detects the additional memory and automatically updates the system configuration information To confirm the amount of memory installed in the computer click Start Control Panel System To install a memory module in DIMM B 1 Follow the procedures in Before You Begin 2 Turn the computer upside down loosen the captive screw on the memory module cover and then remove the cover 1 captive screw on memory module cover NOTICE To prevent damage to the memory module connector do not use tools to spread the memory module securing clips 3 If you are replacing a memory module remove the existing module a Use your fingertips to carefully spread apart the securing clips on each end of the memory module connector until the module pops up b Remove the module from the connector 1 memory module 2 securing clips 2 NOTICE If you need to install memory modules in two connectors install a memory module in the connector labeled DIMMA before you install a module in the connector labeled DIMMB Insert memory modules at a 45 degree angle to avoid damaging the connector K NOTE If the memory module is not installed properly the computer may not boot properly No error message indicates this failure 4 Ground yourself and install the new memory module a Align the notch in the module edge connector with the tab in the connector slot b Slide the module firmly into the slot at a 45 degree angle and rotate
