5. 11 Instant Wireless Series Wireless Connection to a PC If you want to use a wireless connection to access the Router follow these instructions Before you begin make sure that all of your network s hardware is powered off including the Router PCs and cable or DSL modem 2 Connect an Ethernet network cable from your cable or DSL modem to the Internet port on the Router s rear panel as shown in Figure 3 4 This is the only port that will work for your modem connection 3 Power on the cable or DSL modem Figure 3 4 4 Connect the power adapter to the Power port and then plug the power adapter into a power outlet Note You should always plug the Router s power adapter into a power A strip with surge protection e The Power LED on the front panel will light up green as soon as the power adapter is connected properly e The Diag LED will light up red for a few seconds and turn off when the self test is complete If this LED stays on for one minute or longer see Appendix A Troubleshooting 4 Power on one of the PCs on your wireless network s 5 For initial access to the Router through a wireless connection make sure the PC s wireless adapter has its SSID set to linksys a or linksys g which are the Router s default SSID settings depending upon the wireless devices you are using and its WEP encryption is disabled After you have accessed the Router you can change the Route

Supports IPSec and PPTP Pass Through e Easily Configurable through a Web Browser Locally and over the Internet e DDNS and DHCP Server Capability to Assign IP Addresses Automatically e Supports Static and Dynamic Routing RIP1 and 2 The Router s Functions Simply put a router is a network device that connects two networks together A wireless router connects three networks In this instance the Router connects your wired network and wireless network or the group of PCs in your home or office to the Internet The Router process es and regulates the data that travels between these networks The Router s NAT feature protects your network of PCs so users on the public Internet side cannot see your PCs This is how your network remains private The Router protects your network by inspecting every packet coming in through the Internet port before delivery to the appropriate PC on your net work The Router inspects Internet port services like the web server ftp server or other Internet applications and if allowed it will forward the packet to the appropriate PC on the LAN side Dual Band Wireless A G Broadband Router Remember that the Router s ports connect to two sides The 10 100 LAN ports connect to the LAN and the Internet port connects to the Internet The LAN ports transmit data at 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps and the broadband port or Internet port transmits data at 10 100 Mbps Your wireless devices connect to the

A notebook computer is a battery powered personal comput er generally smaller than a briefcase that can easily be transported and conve niently used in temporary spaces such as on airplanes in libraries temporary offices and at meetings A notebook computer sometimes called a laptop com puter typically weighs less than five pounds and is three inches or less in thick ness OFDM Developed for wireless applications Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing OFDM technology offers superior performance increased data rates and more reliable transmissions than previous technologies such as DSSS OFDM is a scheme in which numerous signals of different frequencies are combined to form a single signal for transmission on the medium OFDM works by breaking one high speed data stream into a number of lower speed data streams which are then transmitted in parallel Each lower speed stream is used to modulate a subcarrier Essentially this creates a multi carrier transmission by dividing a wide frequency band or channel into a number of narrower frequency bands or sub channels OFDM 1s also used for other appli cations including powerline networking 107 108 Instant Wireless Series Packet A unit of data routed between an origin and a destination in a network Passphrase Used much like a password a passphrase simplifies the WEP encryption process by automatically generating the WEP encryption keys for Linksys products

Wireless Adapter 4 Cable or DSL Modem PC with Ethernet Adapter Figure 1 1 e Chapter 7 The Router s Web based Utility The Web based Utility controls all of the Router s functions and settings This chapter shows you how to use this Utility When you re finished with these basic steps you will be ready to connect to the Internet You can also modify the Router s settings further for example you can adjust security features and other settings to enable online gaming see Chapter 7 The Router s Web based Utility Instant Wireless Series Dual Band Wireless A G Broadband Router Chapter Getting 0 Know the The Reset Button The Reset button can be used in one of two ways Dual Band Wireless A G If the Router is having problems connecting to the Internet press the Reset Broadband Router button for just a moment with a paper clip or a pencil tip This clears up any jammed connections and is similar to pressing the Reset button on your PC The Router s Back Panel to reboot it The Router s ports shown in Figure 2 1 are located on the Router s back panel This will reboot the Router while keeping all of the Router s settings If you are experiencing extreme problems with the Router and have tried all other troubleshooting measures press the Reset Button and hold it down for 10 seconds This will restore factory defaults and clear all of the Router s settings including settings such

14. connectivity to a PC In a networked environment a network interface card 1s the typical adapter that allows the PC or server to connect to the intranet and or Internet Ad hoc Network An ad hoc network is a group of computers each with a wireless adapter connected as an independent 802 11 wireless LAN Ad hoc wireless computers operate on a peer to peer basis communicating directly with each other without the use of an access point Ad hoc mode is also referred to as an Independent Basic Service Set or as peer to peer mode ADSL Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line A technology for transmitting digital information at a high bandwidth on existing phone lines to homes and businesses Unlike regular dialup phone service ADSL provides continuously available always on connection ADSL is asymmetric in that it uses most of the channel to transmit downstream to the user and only a small part to receive information from the user ADSL simultaneously accommodates analog voice information on the same line ADSL is generally offered at downstream data rates from 144 Kbps to about 6 Mbps A form of ADSL known as Universal ADSL or G lite has been approved as a standard by the ITU TS ADSL was specifically designed to exploit the one way nature of most multi media communication in which large amounts of information flow toward the user and only a small amount of interactive control information is returned Several experiments with ADSL to real

Router through either 802 1 1a 802 11b or draft 802 11g wireless technol ogy IP Addresses What s an IP Address IP stands for Internet Protocol Every device on an IP based network including PCs print servers and routers requires an IP address to identify its location or address on the network This applies to both the Internet and LAN connections There are two ways of assigning an IP address to your network devices You can assign static IP addresses or use the Router to assign IP addresses dynamically Note Since the Router uses NAT technology the only IP address that can be seen from the Internet for your network is the Router s Internet IP address However even this Internet IP address can be blocked so that the Router and network seem invisible to the Internet see the Block WAN Requests description under Filters in Chapter 7 The Router s Web based Utility Static IP Addresses A static IP address is a fixed IP address that you assign manually to a PC or other device on the network Since a static IP address remains valid until you disable it static IP addressing ensures that the device assigned it will always have that same IP address until you change it Static IP addresses must be unique and are commonly used with network devices such as server PCs or print servers If you use the Router to share your cable or DSL Internet connection contact your ISP to find out if they have assigned a stati

99. ireless A G Broadband Router Appendix B How to Ping Your ISP s E mail amp Weh Addresses Virtually all Internet addresses are configured with words or characters e g www linksys com www yahoo com etc In actuality however these Internet addresses are assigned to IP addresses which are the true addresses on the Internet For example www yahoo com is 66 218 71 87 this IP address may change Type it into your web browser and you will wind up at the Linksys home page every time There are servers that translate the URL to an IP address this is called the Domain Name System DNS IP and web addresses however can sometimes be long and hard to remember Because of this certain ISPs will shorten their server addresses to single words or codes on their users web browser or e mail configurations If your ISP s e mail and web server addresses are configured with single words www e mail home pop3 etc rather than whole Internet addresses or IP addresses the Router may have problems sending or receiving mail and accessing the Internet This happens because the Router has not been configured by your ISP to accept their abbreviated server addresses The solution is to determine the true web addresses behind your ISPs code words You can determine the IP and web addresses of your ISP s servers by pinging them Important If you don t have your ISP s web and e mail IP addresses you must either get them from your ISP
